The Master of Artificial Intelligence is not yet precisely defined, but universities like, Northwestern University are exploring and already building out full AI Masters programs . 

In Northwestern's case, for several years, it has offered an internationally recognized advanced research program in artificial intelligence. The multidisciplinary program educates students from a number of backgrounds - among them engineering, sciences, economics, administration, psychology, and languages - in all parts of knowledge-based technology, intellectual science, and their applications. The one-year program, taught completely in English, is the results of a partnership between a lot of internationally notable research units from seven various faculties of the university. Northwestern University is making another move to cash in on the explosion of Big Data, offering a master's degree in artificial intelligence. The 15-month program will begin accepting applications for fall 2018. Northwestern expects to enroll 10 to 15 students for the first class, eventually increasing to about 40. Five years ago, Northwestern launched a master's in data analytics that now has 40 students. Demand is surging for artificial intelligence talent for everything from trading to autonomous vehicles. "Companies and institutions need intelligent tools that go beyond simple analytics and allow users and researchers to interact with and explore their data," said Kristian Hammond, a Northwestern professor of computer science and director of the program.

Northwestern says its master's in AI is a first among local engineering schools, although Illinois Institute of Technology offers a master's in computational intelligence, and undergrads at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can specialize in AI, robotics and cybernetics. Northwestern has been making a name for itself in artificial intelligence, dating back to the Intelligent Information Laboratory, led by Hammond and Larry Birnbaum, who developed technology that resulted in the spinoff Narrative Science.
